I went to UKM today to download some IEEE papers since UKM doesn’t provide remote access for their students like what UTEM did for their students. As expected, the place is like a ghost town, only manage to find few middle east students lingering around the campus. As I access the wifi there, I’m very impress with the internet speed because I could never get this kind of speed during normal days. I even manage to connect to the wifi seamlessly which I often have to wait for the “connection in progress” bar to complete its connection during the normal days. I realize that UKM have relatively good ICT infrastructure but they don’t have a good QOS to provide the service. Probably I can propose a project to improve this area but I’m so tight with my current LTE project. Maybe one day…

Introduction to 4th Generation of Wireless Communication Technology

One of the reason that motivates me to tender my resignation at UMW is to explore into new area of wireless technology called 4G. There are several kind of 4G technologies being developed right now. I’ll be concentrating on the technology called LTE ( Long Term Evolution ). Further information can be found in here.

Right now, I’m currently conduction research related to development of LTE’s physical layer where the title of the research is Performance Evaluation of PAPR in OFDM for LTE-UMTS System where I’m being guided under Professor Dr. Mahamod Ismail. I’ve just undergone a presentation for my research proposal. My presentation material about my research can be found here.

There’s also a good book for those who wants to explore LTE in detail which called 3G Evolution: HSPA and LTE for Mobile Broadband by Erik Dahlman et al.

Withdraw subjects

I’ve already passed the middle term of my study here and just realized that I’m too old to take 7 subjects in one semester. I’ve been studying everyday, occupying myself in my room, only do few outings just to buy some groceries but still couldn’t cover all the subjects. I went to my faculty helpdesk and I’ve been given a yellow form where in the form I’m required to get signatures from the lecturer and the Head of Department. Trying to find the lecturer in their room is a big problem and I’ve wasted ½ of my day just to get their signature. In the end, I end up seeing the lecturer at the class since it is almost impossible to see them in the room. Later, I found out the the withdraw process can be done online thru UKM SMPWeb. Sometimes I wonder it is because I really don’t have enough time to study or it is because other factors such as these.

signals and more signalssss

I decided to focus my graduate study in the area of signal processing. Unfortunately, I’ve forgotten all the basic concepts of signals & system. I can’t even understand even a single formula stated in a journal. This is bad… very bad. Shamefully, I started to study the basics by using the typical signal and system textbook (written by Oppenheim). Fortunately, I still kept my old lecture notes during my degree years. Surprisingly, my notes was comprehensive and easily understandable thanks to Dr. Yasmin Hanum Md Thayoob. I wonder whether she’s still at Uniten right now. A hardworking lecturer that used to teach me about the subject one step at a time.

After a month at UKM

I’m able to conclude about certain aspects of UKM’s Engineering Faculty. Basically I found that the faculty are a bit short of staffs, both academic and non academic departments. You might notice that most of the lecturers are quite busy and they have a limited consultation hours for their students.

I need books!!!

Some lecturers use different kind of reference books for their lectures consisting of old books and books that cannot be found in the library. To, reading their lecturer notes is not enough for to understand a particular subject. Because of this, I have to go to other university’s library to get the books that I need. I went to several nearby universities like UPM and UM. From what I can see, UPM has better range of books and the library is organized, right from its own management staff to its library itself. Besides that, I only have to pay RM110 for the membership (to borrow books) compared to UM that require RM200 (fees) + RM600 (cagaran?!!?). Aiyo… die la like this is if have to pay RM800, better go buy at MPH better.

Research Topic

As I’ve explained, this is a course work type of master program. There will be a subject call “Project” where the student is required to conduct a research (smaller scale compared to Master Program by thesis). Even though it is in a smaller scale, it takes about 1 year to complete it based on previous students’ experience. So I have to start to find a topic for my research now even though I’m planning to register subject “Project” next semester. This is madnesssss… Actually I’ve already have a supervisor in mind to supervise my project which is Prof Mahamod. He’s quite a busy man but he’s very helpful. His research focus mainly on mobile communication but he also have other research work but its still related to communication. During my 1st meeting with him, (request an appointment thru his PA), he generously provided me with all the resources such as research papers, articles etc that I need to start my research work.

Student are required to read journals, papers, thesis, etc on a particular area until at a level they have the ability to comment about the particular research area.

Bookstore

I’m required to purchace several textbooks because some lecturer rely their teachings prom a particular book. Unfortunately, UKM does not have a book store of its own ( as what I’ve been told by the Engineering Faculty staff). However, you can buy books from a stall located beside the surau. The only problem is, the stall doesn’t open everyday. Sort of a illegal stall operating within the faculty… heheh.

Research work

For this master degree program, the students are required to conduct a project. Normally a project would take more than 6 months to complete. Since this is a 1 year program, I have to take an initiative to start my project early even though I haven’t register that subject.

Prof Mahamod is one of the lecturer at the Engineering Faculty that specialize in Mobile Communication. I made an appointment to see Prof Mahamod for my project work.
